Prime Video has officially canceled My Lady Jane, the historical fantasy series that had garnered widespread acclaim.
Prime Video has discontinued My Lady Jane, starring Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel, after season one due to low viewership despite its 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reported US-based entertainment magazine Deadline on Friday. Based popular novel by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton, and Cynthia Hand, the show premiered on June 27, 2024, and captivated audiences with its imaginative retelling of the life of Lady Jane Grey, the “Nine Day Queen.”
Although My Lady Jane garnered significant critical praise for its clever and fantastical portrayal of Tudor history, it did not manage to attract a large enough viewership. The show failed to make an appearance on Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming charts, a stark contrast to its positive reviews.
According to a Screenrant report, despite its intriguing storyline and fresh take on historical events, the series was canceled by Prime Video largely due to its low viewership numbers.
Why My Lady Jane is Canceled
The cancellation of My Lady Jane comes as a significant disappointment, especially considering the promising developments hinted at for a potential second season. Series creator Gemma Burgess had previously shared her vision for Season 2, which would have explored the adventures of Jane Grey in a politically turbulent England under Queen Mary. The first season concluded with Jane’s dramatic escape from execution, leaving many fans eager to see how her story would unfold in the next chapter.
Despite receiving widespread critical acclaim for its imaginative and witty take on Tudor history, My Lady Jane struggled to capture a substantial audience. The series failed to break into Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming charts, indicating a lack of audience interest.
Both the leads of the show, Emily and Edward, expressed their disappointment over the cancellation of the show on their official social media handles.
“Love you all, thanks for watching,” Emily wrote on her Instagram story on August 17 with a broken heart emoji, sharing a behind-the-scenes picture.
