On Monday, the Film Federation of India (FFI) announced Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars. The film was selected from a pool of 29 contenders, including Kalki 2898 AD, Animal, Chandu Champion, Srikanth, and Sam Bahadur.
The film, co-produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, is a comedy-drama that revolves around two newly-wed brides who go missing shortly after their weddings. Their disappearance triggers a chaotic search, highlighting societal expectations and the roles of women in traditional Indian settings. The film features a talented cast, including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan.
A key reason the film resonated with audiences nationwide was its female protagonist, Phool Kumari, portrayed by Nitanshi Goel. After being separated from her husband on a train, Phool Kumari shows remarkable resourcefulness, determination, and strength.
