Rhea Chakraborty stated that she is not ready to get married any time soon because she thinks she has many things to do in her career.
In a candid interview with Humans of Bombay, actress Rhea Chakraborty opened up about the devastating ordeal she faced after the tragic death of her boyfriend, Sushant Singh Rajput, on June 14, 2020. Rhea revealed the emotional and psychological challenges she endured, describing how her life was turned upside down as she became the target of relentless media scrutiny and public backlash.
Rhea Chakraborty on the Trauma of Losing Sushant
Reflecting on this dark period, Rhea spoke about the trauma of losing a loved one while also facing public disgrace. “I remember looking at myself in the mirror and asking, ‘You’re scared, right?’ It almost felt like the mirror said yes,” Rhea recounted. The relentless media coverage and constant investigations took a heavy toll on her, with mobs gathering outside her home and cameras following her every move.
Rhea Chakraborty on the Unnerving Experience of Jail
Rhea also provided insight into her time in police custody, describing it as a surreal experience that fundamentally changed her. “When I walked out of prison, I knew I would never be the same person again. Jail is actually a very different world because there’s no society in jail. It’s all about survival, you know? Every single day was about surviving. And each day felt like a year,” she revealed.
Sharing her first two weeks experience in jail, Rhea said it was very difficult as she tried to adjust. It took her a while to accept what had happened. “My time in there was actually really difficult in the first two weeks to kind of adjust to this situation because no one ever believes that they are going to jail. Once you are in there, it takes a long time to understand that this has happened. There is a deep depression and darkness that I obviously experienced…You are really thinking negative thoughts now. I’ve always been a very bubbly, positive person, like delusionally optimistic,” she added.
Rhea Chakraborty on How Friends Supported Her Through Difficult Times
Talking about her friends, Rhea said in the interview, “One of my friends – couple friends – they used to drink with my dad and eat food with them every night while we were inside. When I came out, ‘I’m like, why have you gained so much weight? Kameeno, main waha jail mein thi aur tumlog yaha khana khaa rahe ho, weight put on kar rahe ho (I was in jail and you were eating food and putting on weight). They were like, ‘No, dude. We were just trying to make uncle-aunty eat and drink and make them feel a little normal. And I was, like, ‘Oh wow!’”
She added, “I was surrounded by superpowers of women. Some of my girlfriends – the way they stood by me – my God! You don’t need anything else… you can have one true friend in life and that’s enough. Shibani (Dandekar) was that for me… The way Shivani stood for me was enough for me to know that the whole world can be against me but I have one friend.”
Rhea Chakraborty on Marriage Plans
In the interview, Rhea shared, “First of all, there is no right age for marriage. Secondly, I’m reaching this place, ‘Karni hi kyun hai (Why do you want)?’ Why do you want to get married?… Why should this be a pressure on you only? Men don’t feel this pressure. Because of the biological clock. Great, you can freeze your eggs. That is also a bit torturous, but please do it because it’s available. Most of my girlfriends either got married in their 40s or got pregnant in their 40s and had children in their 40s. The majority of them did it then.”
The Roadies diva also added how she`s now contemplating being single throughout her 30s and exploring ideas of getting married in her 40s.
Rhea further said, “In my Excel sheet of pros and cons, the 40 category is winning. I`m 32, and I don`t think I`m ready yet because I want to do a lot of things in my professional life… I don’t want to go to a court of law for one more thing.”
Rhea began her career as a video jockey and has worked in both TV shows and films. She was last seen as a gang leader on MTV Roadies 19.
