The six-episode web series IC 814 Kandahar Hijack, starring Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, and Dia Mirza, is now available on Netflix. The series is based on the true story of the Indian passenger flight hijacked by terrorists in December 1999, marking the longest hijack in history, lasting seven days. With the series now streaming, here’s a look at some Bollywood films that also revolve around airplane hijacks.
Neerja (2016)
Neerja is a released in 2016 starring sonam Kapoor in lead role directed by Ram Madhvani and written by Saiwyn Quadras and Sanyuktha Chawla Shaikh. The film is based on story of Neerja, a flight attendant, boards Pan Am flight 73 in 1986. When the flight is hijacked by terrorists, Neerja risks her life to stall the terrorists from attacking the passengers on board.
IB71(2023)
Vidyut Jammwal starrer IB71 directed by based on the 1971 Indian Airlines hijacking, written and directed by Sankalp Reddy. It stars Vidyut Jammwal, Vishal Jethwa and Faizan Khan, alongside Anupam Kher, Ashwath Bhatt, Danny Sura and Suvrat Joshi. IB71 is Jammwal’s first film as a producer and was released on 12 May 2023 to mixed reviews from critics.
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga (2023)
A flight attendant and her business partner on a mission to steal diamonds and free themselves from the clutches of a loan shark.At 40,000 feet in the air, the heist goes horribly wrong and turns into a hostage situation. The film was released in 2023 stars Sunny Kaushal and Yami Gautam in lead roles.
Bell Bottom (2021)
Starring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, Bell Bottom is an action-thriller inspired by the multiple hijackings of Indian airlines in 1980s. The movie was directed by Ranjit M. Tewari and written by Aseem Arora and Parvez Shaikh. It explores the story of a R&AW mission to rescue the passengers of a flight that Khalistani terrorists hijacked during the rule of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
In addition to Akshay Kumar, Bell Bottom stars Vaani Kapoor, Huma Qureshi, Adil Hussain, and Lara Dutta in pivotal roles.
Yodha(2024)
Yodha is a action thriller film directed by Sagar Ambre and Pushkar Ojha.
